Brandal

Brandal is a small coastal village of around 400 inhabitants at the outermost tip of Hareidlandet in Hareid municipality, facing Breisundet and the open ocean. The village is surrounded by steep mountains and has always made its living from the sea — first fishing, then Arctic seal hunting.

Om Brandal

Brandal became famous as a base for Arctic seal hunting. In 1898, father and son Severin and Peter Brandal set out with ice-reinforced vessels, and the village served as home port for a total of 47 Arctic ships until the last hunt in 1998. The Ishavsmuseet Aarvak museum preserves this unique heritage. Brandal was also an important base for herring fishing and other coastal catches through generations.
